Skills Using Word 2010 and Word 2011

Recently I have discovered that many, many people who have Word 2007, 2010 and 2011 could be getting more from their word processing program than they are.  Mostly they type, fix a few spelling errors and maybe Bold, italicize or underline and that's about it.  I propose to provide some tips that won't take long to learn and give users more options when they "process words".

Here is the "ribbon" for Word 2011 in the Home position:

Notice the green arrows.  They point to a little window under "Styles".   See the little triangle pointing to the right in the window, on the right side of the window.  Find it in your copy of word.  If you click that little triangle you get some styles "made in advance".  How do you use these?

Let's say you have a paragraph heading.  Select it (paint with the cursor or trackpad).  Click on the right arrow and choose a style, say "Heading 2".  Wow!  your heading is set apart from the rest of the text.

To do that for all your headings, either
select each heading, then click over to the style you chose, and click it or,
select all the headings by holding down the Command key (Mac) while painting each one) or ALT key (Windows, Word 2010) and when you have them all selected, find and select the style you want.

Cool, right?  Leave a comment and let us know what you think.
